What is Mobipocket® Reader?

The Mobipocket Reader is a universal eBook Reader for Windows® computers running Windows 2000 (or newer) as well as Windows Mobile®-based Smartphones and other PDAs.

What are the features of Mobipocket Reader?

Features of Mobipocket Reader include:

  • Supports altering font size, font type, font color, and background color
  • Offers full-screen mode for a clearer viewing option
  • Supports full text searching, and conveniently re-flows the text to display the word searched at the top of the page
  • Automatically directs a re-opened eBook to the last page read
  • Library function allows you to create categories to organize eBooks
  • Supports horizontal and vertical scrolling, zooming (Pocket PC only), and enhancement of embedded images
  • SubPixel font technology allows smooth display for clear text reading
  • Full text justification and ample page margins
  • Supports international languages including UTF-8 encoding (for non-Western European languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Russian, etc.)

On what platforms does Mobipocket Reader run?

Mobipocket runs on Windows 2000 (or newer) as well as Windows Mobile®-based Smartphones and some PDAs. A list of supported devices is provided below.

Although Mobipocket is designed to work on all of the platforms listed below, it is not possible given the number of available devices to guarantee that each device is supported.

PalmOS®:
PalmOS version 4.0 and above: all devices.

Windows Mobile®:
Pocket PC 2000/2002/WM 2003/WM 2005: all devices.

Windows Mobile-based Smartphones:
All devices.

Symbian OS™:
Series60, UIQ, Series80, Series 90.

BlackBerry®:
Firmware 3.7 or higher. Handhelds 5800, 6500, 6700, 6200, 7100, 7200, 7500 series can be upgraded to firmware 3.7 if needed except 5810/5820, 6750, and 6710 (with only 8MB of flash) devices.

In order to use Mobipocket eBooks, it seems I have to register a 'PID'. What is a PID, and why do I have to register a PID with this site?

A PID (Personal IDentifier) is a unique identifier for your copy of Mobipocket Reader. Registration of your PID is required so that your copy of Mobipocket is registered to your device, enabling your device to open and use eBooks that have been DRM-protected. Once your PID is registered, you can download and enjoy Mobipocket eBooks.

Where do I find my Mobipocket Reader PID?

Your PID is accessed in different ways depending on the version of Mobipocket you have installed.

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 6…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader on your computer.
  2. Select 'Reading Devices'.
  3. Click the 'Edit Properties' button for the device you wish to register. The PID is listed on the 'General Tab'.
    Your PID is 10 characters in length and may include both and letters and numbers.

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 5…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader on your computer.
  2. Select 'My Device List'.
  3. Click the 'Edit Properties' button for the device you wish to register. The PID is listed on the 'General Tab'.
    Your PID is 10 characters in length and may include both and letters and numbers.

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 4...

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader on your device.
  2. Choose Help > About from the Mobipocket Reader menu.
    Your PID is 10 characters in length and may include both and letters and numbers.

Alternatively, you may open Mobipocket Reader on your device and choose Options > About Mobipocket from the Mobipocket Reader menu.

How do I register my Mobipocket Reader PID?

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 6…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader on your computer.
  2. Select 'Reading Devices'.

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 4…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader on your device.
  2. Choose Help > About from the Mobipocket Reader menu. The PID is displayed. Your PID is 10 characters in length and may include both and letters and numbers.
  3. Login to your library account and select 'My Mobipocket PIDs'.
  4. Enter your PID in the 'Mobipocket PID' field.
  5. Click 'Add'.
  6. Click 'Done'.
    Your PID is registered.

Can I register more than one PID?

As long as you have Mobipocket Reader 4.4 or higher you may register 3 PIDs to your account. In fact, if you like to read on more than 1 device (such as your PC and your PDA), it is recommended that you register multiple PIDs.

If I upgrade my Mobipocket Reader, will I lose my PID?

When upgrading Mobipocket Reader, uninstalling the older version will remove your PID from some handheld devices. If you do not uninstall Mobipocket Reader before installing a newer version, you will most likely maintain your PID.

Once I register my PID at the site, can I change it?

You can register up to 3 PIDs with this site. If you need a PID deleted from your account in order to register a new one or to correct an error, please contact support. In your correspondence, please include your library card number and the PID which should be removed from your account.

Can I transfer Mobipocket eBooks to my portable device?

Many portable devices support Mobipocket Reader. Follow these instructions to transfer Mobipocket eBooks to portable device…

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 6…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader.
  2. Select the 'eBooks' screen.
  3. Right-click on the eBook that you wish to transfer, and select 'Send' followed by the name of the device to which you want to send the eBook.

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 5…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader.
  2. Select the 'My Library' screen.
  3. Right-click on the eBook that you wish to transfer, and select 'Send' followed by the name of the device to which you want to send the eBook.

If you are using Mobipocket Reader 4…

  1. Open Mobipocket Reader.
  2. Select File > My Library.
  3. Click the 'Send to PDA' link under the title you wish to transfer to your device.

Can I transfer Mobipocket eBooks to an Amazon® Kindle?

No. The Amazon Kindle does not currently support eBooks protected with Mobipocket DRM.

Why can't I transfer Mobipocket eBook titles directly to my Sony eReader?

Mobipocket eBook titles, provided by OverDrive, Inc., use DRM protection technology that is unfortunately not supported by the Sony eReader.

OverDrive, along with hundreds of online eBook providers, is hopeful that Mobipocket and Sony can reach an agreement that would enable support for DRM-protected Mobipocket eBooks on the Sony eReader.
